At-home health tests in the UK: how to choose (2026)

Written by the U-Test team using NHS and NICE guidance.Medically reviewed by Dr Rohit Kulkarni, Medical Director. Last checked . Next review . This guide is general information, not medical advice. Speak to your GP or pharmacist about symptoms or results.

At a glance

  • Rapid tests read at home in minutes; lab kits give a number but take days.
  • Each kit checks one thing: know what yours can and can't tell you.
  • Home tests are screens, not a diagnosis.
  • The NHS tests for free in many cases, including STIs and bowel screening (50 to 74).

The best at-home health test is the one that checks the thing you want to know, in a way you can do easily, with a clear next step. In the UK you can choose a rapid test you read yourself in minutes, or a kit you post to a lab and wait days for. Both are screening tests, not a diagnosis.

Rapid tests vs post-to-lab kits

A rapid test is read at home, by you, in minutes. A post-to-lab kit is read in a laboratory and gives a number, but takes longer.

Rapid home test Post-to-lab kit
Where it's read At home, by you In a laboratory
Time to result Usually 1 to 15 minutes Usually a few days, including post
Result A line, colour or band (for example low / average / high) Often a number, such as nmol/L
Good for A quick private check, a first step Exact levels, tracking over time
Next step GP or clinic for an unexpected result GP or clinic for an unexpected result

5 things to check before you buy

  1. What it checks. One marker or several? A thyroid TSH test is not a full thyroid panel.
  2. The sample. Finger-prick, urine, swab, stool, saliva or semen. Pick one you're comfortable with.
  3. How you get the result. Read it yourself in minutes, or wait for a lab.
  4. What it can't tell you. A good kit says so plainly.
  5. What to do next. Look for clear GP, NHS 111 or clinic advice for each result.

When the NHS tests for free

  • Sexual health: NHS sexual health clinics test for free, and many areas post free STI kits.
  • Bowel cancer screening: the NHS posts a free FIT kit every 2 years to people aged 50 to 74 (England). Always do it when invited.
  • Symptoms: if you feel unwell, your GP can arrange blood tests. A home test is never a reason to delay seeing a doctor.

Can I get a blood test without seeing a doctor?

Yes. Home finger-prick tests for vitamin D, iron, thyroid (TSH), PSA and testosterone need no GP referral. If a result is unexpected, take it to your GP.

Frequently asked questions

Are home health tests accurate?

Each kit's own leaflet sets out how it performs. Where a study is published, we show it on the product page: for example, our chlamydia and gonorrhoea self tests showed 96.0% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity against lab PCR testing. A home test is a screen, not a diagnosis, so take any unexpected result to your GP.

Which is the best home health test in the UK?

It depends on what you want to check. Use the 5 checks in this guide: what the test checks, the sample, how you get the result, what it can't tell you, and what to do next.

Do I need a GP referral for a home health test?

No. You can buy and use a home test without a referral. Take any unexpected result to your GP.

How fast are rapid home tests?

U-Test rapid kits give a result in 1 to 15 minutes, depending on the test. The sperm test reads in 5 minutes after the sample rests for 60 minutes.

Are home test results private?

Yes. You read a rapid test yourself at home, so nobody else sees the result unless you choose to share it.
